READERS
Readers in the Church of
England are lay people called by God, trained and licensed by their
Bishop. They lead worship, preach and teach about Jesus and the
Christian faith and encourage effective pastoral care in evangelistic
ministry." (The Rt Revd Christopher Mayfield, Chair of the Central
Readers Council.) There are two Readers at Holy Trinity Meanwood at the
present time (Mrs Frances Needham, licensed in 1997 and Mr Olasupo
Ogunyinka, started training as a reader in 2004 and licensed in 2007).
They have a varied ministry at Holy Trinity. This includes leading
worship such as the Ministry of the word, services for special
occasions and preaching, which is an important part of Reader Ministry
and aims to bring about new understanding and an awareness of the
presence of God in people's lives.
Bereavement care in the
parish is an important aspect of Reader ministry in Meanwood and this
involves assisting the vicar with visiting those who have been bereaved
and inviting them to the Memorial services which are held three times each year. The Memorial services are very
important to those who have been bereaved. Some people come to just one
service whilst others come on a regular basis and each person is
invited to light a candle in memory of each person who has died.
Having links with other
Readers in the Diocese is very important and this involves attending
training sessions and meetings with the Leeds Branch of Readers and
also other Readers in the Diocese.
